Professor Nicolau van Uden (1921-1991)

  • He was born in the Netherlands. Naturalized Portuguese in 1975.
  • Degree in Medicine, University of Vienna, Austria. PhD in Biology, University of Coimbra.
  • Aggregate in Microbiology, New University of Lisbon.
  • Director of the Microbiology Laboratory (1966-91) and of the Teaching Department of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC).
  • Promoter and director of the international monographic courses “Estudos Avançados de Oeiras” (IGC, 1969-91).
  • Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (1979-91).
  • He initiated and directed the Portuguese Yeast Culture Collection (now PYCC, 1952-91).
  • Doctor Honoris Causa, University of the Orange Free State, South Africa.
  • Honorary Member of the Portuguese Society of Biochemistry and of the Spanish Societies of Microbiology and Biochemistry.
